Big Eyes

Big Eyes “Hard Life” LP (Don Giovanni Records)
By Rich Cocksedge

This trio from Brooklyn, NY, has been highly rated by many people whom I respect in terms of their musical likes and dislikes, so when my daughters bought me the LP for my birthday (having been pointed in the right direction!) I was extremely pleased.  That pleasure increased immediately as I heard the opening track “Your Lies” as it was obvious that the band were taking their musical cues from the likes of the Ramones and The Muffs, two bands that I have a huge admiration for.  It’s hard not to notice influence the former have had on Big Eyes throughout the album but what is also good to hear is that they’ve mixed in hints of the latter to get a less generic sound than many bands that listen to The Ramones.
