Dead Sara
Viper Room
By Victoria Jane Joyce
Post Halloween 2014 in WeHo and it was just like Woodstock – we were half a million strong. Except it ain’t no Peace, Love and Music. It was Villiany, Vomiting and EDM. But we call it home.
And for the uninformed, the day after the world’s biggest Halloween party, November 1st is Dia de Muertos. This is super huge in SoCal and much much cooler with it’s sugar-cube, skull make up and Mexican folklore. Lot’s
of puppets and tacos. So the Viper was dead-on (heh heh) with it’s Day of the Dead line up featuring Fire in the Hamptons and The Filthy Souls with Dead Sara headlining.
Don’t let the waif-like frame fool you. Dead Sara’s lead singer, Emily Armstrong is a powerhouse rocker. They have big following so The Other Dead (heh heh) sold out The Viper Room and packed it like a pair of skinny jeans. It was a wild night even by Viper standards. The costume motif was there but not a total commitment. Which made it fun.
Ms Armstrong is the perfect nexus of a Rock and Roll vocalist in the fine classic tradition of Janis Joplin, Grade Slick and even a smidgen of Old School Bette Midler. She throws her head back and let’s it rip. Blending the Blues, Rock, Soul, Punk, Grunge, Glam and Gospel, she’s made a list and checked it twice.
The rest of the band, co-anchor; Siouxie Medley with Chris Null on bass and Sean Friday drumming are very busy cranking out the music while Emily looses her mind. You cannot take your eyes off them. They have a great look fashion-wise of Sexy Slacker meets Urban Punk on Melrose for a Gluten Free lunch after a night of debauchery. So cute.
The D’Sara will be on the road for the month of November with their “How the West Was Rocked.” Drop what you’re doing for this band.
