Nick Vivid Interview
By CaryDoll (SugarBuzz NY)

These guys have been playing their original tunes in city bars now and again for the last few years. Would love to see them make it big! I hope you SugarBuzz readers will check out their music on YouTube.  Recently I found out more about the band from frontman Nick Vivid. Nick has a fluidity onstage and style that reminds one at times of Iggy Pop. And the band has a vital sound that excites and mesmerizes. Definitely one of the more exciting bands on the local New York scene to see.

WHO ARE THE MEMBERS OF THE NUCLEARS?

Nick Vivid – Vox ; Brian Maverick – Guitars / Backup Vocals; Mick Maverick – Lead Guitar / Backup Vocals; Bobby Atoms – Bass ; Geoff Hug – Drums.

HOW LONG HAS THE BAND BEEN TOGETHER?

The band formed in 2003 inWashington DC between Brian, Bobby, and Mick. They moved to NYC in 2007. Nick and Geoff joined in 2010.

HOW DID YOU COMEUP WITH THE NAME FOR THE BAND?

…..Cause no one else had it. Tough to find cool original band names these days.

WHO DOES THE SONGWRITING IN THE BAND?

We pretty much all do. Everyone’s got their own spin on the “Nuclear Sound”, and the different influences and styles mesh pretty well. Brian and Bobby come from the “Who” and Kinks school. Nick’s from the 70′s Kiss vibe.

Mick loves Judas Priest and Mick Ronson. Geoff digs Amon Duul and the Stooges – lots of avant garde jazz influenced stuff. Everyone loves Alice Cooper, Thin Lizzy, Cheap Trick, and T.Rex. It’s a good mix.

At the end of the day, a good song is a good song. So to that end, it’s a team effort to make every song as good as it can be and everyone helps out with whatever tune is being worked on at the moment. We have about 25 or so in progress.

WHO  DO YOU LOOK TO FOR ROCK N ROLL INSPIRATION?

The classics, and a lot of the locals who we don’t like. Sometimes knowing what you don’t want to end up looking or sounding like has the most influence.

A FAVE BAR TO PERFORM IN.

Tammany Hall in Manhattan has been our go-to as of late for the big parties. Though the Glamdammit party has been our Brooklyn home for the past year or so, so wherever that’s at, we’re usually the house band.

FAVORITE 3 BANDS/PERFORMERS YOU HAVE SEEN…

Locally: The Brats and The Waldos are NYC  legends, Electric Frankenstein are hitting legendary status too.

The Dead Exs, The Naked Heroes, Larry May and Born Loose (Suki’s guitar tone rules), Sorceress, The Mess Around, and The Deafening. That’s more than 3, sorry. We’re very fortunate to have so many good bands in the city.

WHAT IS YOUR PET PEEVE?

All talk and no action. Rude waiters. Bad tippers. Not getting paid.People who destroy the venue mid-set and attack the audience with shards of broken glass from the courtesy bottle. Late period goals from the opposing team. Turnovers at the blue line.

WHEN IS YOUR CD OUT?

Our new single came out April 10th on iTunes and the usual suspects. The single is called “Myrtle Ave at 4:00 AM” which is a song Brian wrote about getting mugged a few blocks from our loft. It’s on our own label, MegaPlatinum, which is distributed by Cockroach Media.

WHAT ARE THE BANDS PLANS FOR 2012?

A few more singles, more videos, and the summer touring circuit. We hit the west coast last fall, and hope to head back there before the end of the year again.
