Lockestar at The Whisky
We pulled a double shift on New Years Eve. It had been raining all day. Mercifully it let up in the early evening, just in time for the high heels and glitter.
We ran to the Viper Room, arriving a little after 9 and caught the better part of Poets and Pornstars, one of our very best favorite bands of Oh-Five. Handsome Hal Ozsan and company get better every time we see them. They finished up their short set with their big closer, “Kicks.” This song needs to be on the radio. Guitar man Tom Domaracki later told us how their new release sold out on CD Baby in one day. Nice. It’s been a very good year for this band and it’s only gonna get better. We got a good luck kiss from Hal round midnight. “It’s me special one.” Ooooh, baby, baby.

The hostess for the evening, Dayle Gloria was leading a camera crew around shooting her very own reality show. Lights, camera, action, Diva!

We hiked up the block and across the street around 10. Luck was holding. The rain stayed away. Over at the Whisky the crowd was just starting to bloom. Ten o’clock is still a little early for the the Sunset Strip.

Lockestar, in its farewell appearance was opening for Wild Child, just like last NYE. “We’re gonna bury it here!” JT Locke said from the stage. Soon to be reborn as Locke 'N' Load, we love their new name. The look was new too. Camouflage and bandanas where there was once leather and vinyl. Iraq Rock? “More guitar driven,” was the three-word pre-set interview from baby brother bass player, Johnny Locke.

The signature pink tube lights were wound round the mic stand so some of the flash is still there. We loved “Complicated” sung by Uzi Ray, their other guitar guy. Their new line up is complete by Gilbert on drums. Big finish was a cover of the “Every Breath You Take,” done with a faster and meaner tempo and an edgier and more paranoid vocal. Many friends were invited on stage to do a farewell dance. Pretty ladies in short skirts and boots. Perfect for A Go Go.

We missed our friend Brett Hellings and his new back up band, the Remedy (Now we owe you one!) when we ran back across the street to the Viper. Still no more rain. Yay. Getting there just in time to hear Miss Dayle give an IN-SAY-E-YANE introduction to “THE GREATEST BLEEPING BAND ON THE STRIP!! BUCKCHERRY!!” And the place went nuts. And we mean nuts.
Unmatched in energy and intensity, Buckcherry played a set that scared us. No, really, we were looking around for exit doors, ‘cause any minute there was gonna be a serious incident, it was that volatile. The BC’s just got back from a mini-tour of Japan and a month of doing local residencies at the Whisky and the Malibu Inn and it paid off big time. They looked it and sounded it. The chops and the moves were laser-eye-surgery sharp.

They stopped their set for the midnight countdown. There was a little confusion about the exact time. Josh didn’t want the responsibility. “I’m not on the World Clock!” The bubbly was being splashed all over. “You guys are the REAL Buckcherry Fans.”

Josh got a little annoyed with one of the cameramen and swiped at his lights like a jungle cat. Rerowww. Warning: Do NOT shine bright lights in this man’s face when he’s doing his thing. And his thing is: pristine rock-scream singing, controlled and smooth. Mr. Todd further has the ability to take it down in tone and texture to smoothly deliver a power ballad. All that and the best tattoos in town. More oooh, baby, baby.

Mr Todd a glow!
Our second regret tonight, after missing Brett, was we split before the too-good to be called a Guns and Roses cover band, Hollywood Roses finished their set. Things were getting a little wild at the Viper, even for us. It’s called Amateur Night for a reason.

We really wanted to stay. We met lead singer, Colby Vain, in the lounge downstairs and he threw a condom at us. How romantic. Oh well, maybe next year.
