Different Gear, Still Speeding

A song that reminds me of seventies Wings, a song that reminds me of the Monkees meets Kula Shaker, a song that reminds me of the Bentback Tulips ripping-off "Instant Karma", I'm startin' to suspect these lads might have a thing for the Fabs...Next up, a song called, "Beatles And Stones"...says he's gonna stand the test of time, like, yep, Beatles And Stones. Cool piano. Lennonesque backing vocals. This is Liam minus Noel. Awful cool, actually.

I'm a lyrics guy, and neither of the Gallaghers can ever be bothered to put thoughtful pen to page, but it's thoroughly decent pop. Brighter sounding than the Smithereens. His singing's even improved, and I always liked his voice. I wish the 60 Ft. Dolls would get back together. Some mellow yellow Donovan meets Cheap Trick, or Help! era Beatles, on "Windup Dream"...."Bring The Light" kicks ass, some swanky piano pounding, Johnny Johnson-style, and the colored girls go "Ahhhh Ahhh..." More Beatle licks. "Baby Come On".

My fave song on this is called, "For Anyone". It's dead cool shimmer pop, like the La's. "Kill For A Dream" reminds one of vintage Oasis. Might be for Noel, who knows? I know it's a bitch when you have to surrender your friendships, and brotherhoods in middle age, or at least, your faith in former partnerships. I hear music from another time, reassurin' me, I can go it alone. It's been good for our kid, to step out of Noel's shadow! He's a talent, in his own write. By track nine, I'm convinced. He's a roller.

Seemed like the money ruined 'em, for awhile, but Beady Eye delivers. It's not as experimental, or as dangerous, as Brian Jonestown Massacre. It's not as raucous, or heavy, as the Jim Jones Revue, but it's fucking stand-up, catchy, undeniably melodic coolness, with a little bit o' soul. Been a long while since Radiohead did anything this good. Still ain't heard Magic Christian. Lightweight in places, makes me think of white feathers and artfully photographed glasses of Milk. I bet Rodney on the Roq's digging this, as much as me. The wistful "Morning Son" makes me think of cherries on the cover of the Paulie solo lp. That's it. This disc's a cherry. The Beat Goes On! Geddit!
