“I must be CRAZY to let Geza X open for me.” Josie Cotton had a record release party at the Knitting Factory for her latest, “Movie Disaster Music” produced by her dear friend, Mr. X.

“This is like a High School Reunion!” said one surf punk in this packed club. With a long line out front of the Knitting Factory we found out later they were turning away late comers. This was a very hot show. Not bad for an old Geza!

The beloved Geza X in a rare stage performance got up there first and humbly announced “I’m gonna play a few songs first.” And that he did. Weird melodies with weirder lyrics; “There’s Batteries In My Head” and “The Paranoids Are Coming.” The very handsome and well-dressed back up band helped him out for “We Need More Power.” Precise electric songs that were delightful. He was mobbed by fans post-set.

Our Josie hit in the 80’s with a cute-as-a-button face and kicky clothes. Remember that category? It included Cyndi Lauper, Pat Benatar and Madonna. Josie had some heat with her hits “Johnny Are You Queer?” A song that the Go-Go’s passed on. Nice break. Cotton was also featured prominently on our fave rave soundtrack “Valley Girl” with the darling Plimsouls.

She’s a tiny thing barely 5 feet tall but the voice is 6 foot 7. Josie’s look is Retro Classic; an A-line mini dress in rouge brocade, square-neck, fishnets, white boots and cat’s eye make up. With a raven bouffant coif the effect was Liz Taylor meets Nancy Sinatra.

With a Power Point Presentation of The Rat Pack in the background, Josie went into a short fun set of mostly torch songs. Our little Punkette, Josie Cotton, is all grow’ed up into a lovely chanteuse. That’s French for Saloon Singer. Damn, she went all Edith Piaf on us!

“Creeps” was our favorite and “Rabbit Hole” had a way cool punk-funk jazziness to it. Josie’s voice is smooth, sweet and smart. Of course she closed the show “Johnny” and a guy dancer in a G-String. The answer is a definite yes! Like a three dollar bill.
