So time machines do exist because it sure feels like the 70s is alive and kicking with this new album from Lords. This Ain’t a Hate Thing, It’s a Love Thing immediately brings to mind psychedelic rock in the vein of Led Zeppelin. Throughout it keeps you on your toes as you just don’t know what’s going to happen next. One part rock, to two parts jazz explosion you can hear the influence of Jimi Hendrix’s innovative guitar style mixed with the unpredictable exuberance of Zeppelin. Despite the broken spontaneity of the jazz sound it remains very rhythmical with a splash of soulful pain courtesy of the blues.

This album is totally out of place in today’s indie orientated market and God bless Lords for that. It’s an exciting, challenging and original sounding breath of fresh air. You feel transported back to a time when music was innovative and made the effort to mess with your head because that’s what music is about. Safety is boring and sticking to the boundaries of genre just induces yawns everywhere.

What music has needed for a long time is a shot of messed up adrenaline to wake us up out of the dreary malaise that has overtaken our music buying habits and This Ain’t A Hate Thing, It’s a Love Thing is the perfect medicine. You’ll never be able to exactly recreate the sheer genius of Zeppelin or Hendrix but if you’re looking for a viable 21st Century alternative then you must buy this album.
