LA favorites, Warner Drive was having a CD Release Party and show at the Roxy on the second Saturday in June. With our favorites, Poets and Pornstars opening, how do you spell G-O?
We found a line down the block and a packed house at this all-ages show. Slight confusion in the start time got us there a little bit late. We caught the last three songs for the Poets & P*’s. They gave the usual 110% for a blistering white hot performance.
Every show from this band becomes more realized with a finely detailed performance. Adding embellishments and taking away excess, more streamlined and sleek. Playing lots of shows in So Cal, building a big fan base and a stage strong presence, Poets and Pornstars never disappoints. Blue-eyed soul that rocks you from you toenails to your eyelashes. Big show finisher was “Son of a Gun,” leader Hal Ozsan sang his brains out. Think Tom Jones being backed by The Ramones.
Lots of rockers brought their parents and some of ‘em brought the kids. It’s a family affair. “Let me know if you run into my parents” was the word from Domo, master guitar for The Poets. After their set we caught up with P&P drummer, Dave in the parking lot next door, schlepping gear.
Us: “We heard more cowbell on “Son of a Gun.” Him with a big smile: “Yeah, right! More Cow Bell! I always pretend I know what that means!”
Back inside the packed house is now snug. Like we said, moms, dads, kids, dudes and babes. And a lot of the babes wearing their Warner Drive Tee’s custom cut down for cleavage. The Drivers made em wait and went on close to midnight, taking the stage with complete darkness and squeals all around.
Warner Drive drove it home. They attacked the stage with their hip-hoppie raging rock. An obvious triumph for the band…lead singer, Jonny posted this on their Myspace page the next day…
“WE SOLD OUT THE ROXY!!!!! That's 650 people, all there to see us headline there at our record release show and party.”
“That show marks the biggest day of my life.. a day that my Father was so looking forward to before he passed away. I know he was there in spirit and helped to make the show a success, but ALL OF YOU who came to support me and the band made that night“
“We're currently riding in the bus on our way to Bakersfield for another show tonight, and then further north to san fran and nor cal for the next couple of weeks. internet access is hard to come by on the road so i'll try my best to check mail, but be patient with me.”
“THANK YOU ALL FOR THE BEST NIGHT OF MY LIFE!!!!!!”
