| I seem to be late on this one. It’s Monday morning and I opened the door to my office here at my mundane day job to find a clipping from a local newspaper slipped underneath.
Danny Sugarman dead at age 50. Holy shit. Seems he suffered from lung cancer and has passed away. Happened last Wednesday. Where the hell have I been? Danny Sugarman is a legend as far as rock fans and authors go. At the age of 12 he was taken to see The Doors in Long Beach and the rest is history. He started hanging around The Doors office in West Hollywood and was befriended my none other than Jim Morrison himself. The stories that occurred between these two can be read in Danny’s masterpiece novel, “Wonderland Ave. Tales Of Glamour And Excess”. If you have any brains you need to read this book. My life was never the same. Amazing accounts of events surrounding Danny’s affiliation with Jim Morrison, The Doors, Iggy Pop, The Rainbow Bar and Grill, The Tropicana Hotel (RIP), Pamela Courson (Jim Morrison’s woman), and drugs to name just a few. One of the funniest stories (or saddest depending on your perception) from “Wonderland Ave.” that comes to mind is when Danny and his father took Jim Morrison out to dinner. Seems Danny’s dad didn’t like Danny hanging around with The Doors. Danny thought that if his dad met Jim he would see that he was just an average guy. Then Jim got drunk. Read the book to find out what happens next. Danny also was co-author of “No One Gets Out Of Here Alive” which is the definitive Morrison / Doors novel. No self respecting Doors fan has not read this book. Yet another masterpiece. After reading this book I preceded to live my life like Jim. Tragic results ensued. Danny also managed The Doors, Ray Manzarek (post Doors), and the notorious Iggy Pop. Danny championed The Doors, making sure future generations learned and appreciated their art and music. Danny, we will miss seeing you at Dukes. Say hi to Morrison for us. In lieu of flowers, you can make a donation in Sugarman’s honor to: MusiCares/ MAP Fund, 817 S. Vine St. Hollywood, CA 90038. MusiCares helps musicians by providing financial, medical and personal assistance in times of need. |
