Slash’s Snakepit It’s 5’o clock Somewhere and Ain’t Life Grand By Lydia (SugarBuzz Correspondent South Wales UK) SugarBuzz Magazine |

| Bluesy, not a word to spring to mind when talking about Slash, especially when you consider his Guns N’ Roses manic rock work and the sleazy, decadent brilliance of current project Velvet Revolver, but for his low-key post-Axl band, Slash’s Snakepit, he and the rest of the members created 2 albums of understated genius. I cannot rave enough about the tracks you will hear on these albums and they definitely shouldn’t be overlooked in favour of GnR or VR. It may have been a Revolver summer but for fans wanting Slash stripped (musically) a little barer, look to the Snakepit if you want to see another side.
Immediate on the WOW factor is track number one on It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere, ‘Neither Can I’. It is a tragic explosion of blues and melancholic rock which, like the rest of the album, sounds more grown up than Guns N’ Roses. Other highlights from this album include "Dime Store Rock", "Doin’ Fine" and "Be the Ball". It can feel slightly inconsistent at times, seemingly not knowing if the aim is for this blues sound or for an all out rock album, but it’s definitely worth checking out. Ain’t Life Grand though is an album that easily rivals Appetite for Destruction for pure rock genius. From the opening track to the close you can’t help but feel swept along with Rod Jackson’s unique voice and Slash’s guitar work is amongst the best I’ve heard. The balance of blues and rock seems equal this time round, "Shine" and "Mean Bone" especially highlight this sitting side by side both perfectly complimenting each other despite contrasting in styles. Definitely check these albums out; they should easily satisfy Guns fans, Velvet Revolver fans, in fact they should satisfy anyone who appreciates a decent rock album with spectacular guitar work and anthemic style choruses. Once they’re in your CD player I can pretty much guarantee they won’t be leaving in a hurry. |
